UNI's 2017-2018 NSSLHA chapter, of over 180 members, focused on campus/community service, social/community building, and professional development. Campus and community service was demonstrated by raising money for the NSSLHA Loves Campaign's charity - the John Tracy Clinic, volunteering to help with the Northeast Iowa Special Olympics, walk in Relay for Life, make holiday cards for area nursing homes and care facilites, as well as send 150 new toys to Woody's Toy Drive and five large shipping boxes of school supplies to Hurricane Harvey victims. Furthermore, as a group, NSSLHA contributed to the greater Cedar Valley community by raising over $2200 for the Walk to End Alzheimer's (which is five times more than the previous year's total).
To improve student relations and professional development, NSSLHA continued to host student panels and professional speakers at all-member meetings, attend Advocacy Day at the state capitol to advocate for the speech-language pathology profession, and facilitate a mentorship program. NSSLHA also promoted excelling sub-organizations: the Communication Sciences and Disorders Cultural and Diversity Club and the Iowa Conference of Communicative Disorders, the only student-led conferences in Iowa that provides Continuing Education Units to professionals.
By exemplifying excellence among its peers in the dedication and development of its members, and its contributions to the campus community and beyond, UNI's 2017-2018 NSSLHA chapter was recognized as Student Organization of the Year! In addition, Suzanne Dripps, the Roy Eblen Speech and Hearing Clinic Director and NSSLHA chapter advisor, was recognized as the Student Organization Advisor of the Year for excelling and exemplifying outstanding service, dedication, and leadership to the organization to distinguish itself.
